Modular housing reshapes demand in federal programs
Federal plans aim to boost housing by 50 percent in six years with new rules requiring minority hiring on federally funded projects. Defense, Labor, and HEW train servicemen for construction while schools partner on vocational programs. The Kaiser Committee notes 1978 needs exceed conventional methods, so prefabricated modular housing may raise output, cut weather delays, reduce costs, and speed financing. Local firms in Frederick, Barber & Ross, William D. Bowers Lumber, Continental Home Sales, Lee R. Saylor, and Young Development are exploring factory production, embracing catalog-style selection and mass assembly to meet housing demand amid labor shortages.
