Senate passes omnibus housing bill despite shortfalls

The Senate approved an omnibus housing bill sending it to the White House by a 59 to 21 vote. It lowers down payments on government insured mortgages and adds safeguards against windfall profits on rental projects while omitting new public housing authority. The plan supports over one million housing units annually but public housing is limited to 35,000 next year for families displaced by slum clearance, far less than Eisenhower’s 140,000 request. Senator Byrd and Capehart sparred over housing scandals, with Byrd accusing a scandal and Capehart urging more time to fix issues. Community events in Baker Park include a costume party and movie show, teen dance August 10, and a magic show August 12.
