Lightning strike kills 17 heifers on Maryland farm near Tuscarora
A mid afternoon lightning bolt struck a sycamore tree on Otis Haines’s 90 head herd near Tuscarora Maryland. The bolt killed 17 of the cattle and injured one more after passing through the tree and into the floodlit field. Vets estimate each heifer weighed 1000 to 1400 pounds and valued above 1000 dollars. The 17 cattle thus represent about twenty thousand dollars in loss. The animals were buried, and removal challenges loom due to scarce local service options.
