Iran and Iraq clash over border town as fighting rages
Nicosia reported Iran said its forces drove Iraqi troops from southern Iran and fought to control a western town. Tehran claimed 1,200 Iraqis killed or wounded. Iraq said it shot down an Iranian F-5 and Iran claimed to down two Iraqi warplanes. The exchange occurred ahead of UN talks with Javier Perez de Cuellar.

County farmers eligible for federal assistance
The Food and Agricultural Council of Frederick County urged farmers to apply for the Emergency Feed Assistance Program and the Emergency Feed Program amid drought. Eligible farmers can buy CCC corn at 75 percent of the county loan rate, about 152 per bushel, with a 50 percent cost share for livestock hay under the EFP. The USDA will locate a purchase site within 50 miles of Frederick, and notify Maryland ASCS. Approximately 250,000 bushels are in CCC stocks, to be reserved for the county.
