New York July 28 Every player in both the National and American Leagues who jumped a bona fide contract was expelled from the Players' Protective Association. Treasurer Donohue said delegates agreed no one should join and profit from protection then break a contract. Hartsel of the Philadelphia Club moved for expulsion and the motion carried unanimously.
In Rome Bishop Thomas O Gorman transmits a cordial Pope Roosevelt letter praising Taft negotiations and American ties. Dawson Telegraphers strike in Yukon territory shows wage cuts and continued Dawson office operation. In Springfield Mo a jealous lover kills his former sweetheart Josephine Sheridan and suicides nearby after a four year acquaintance and broken marriage prospects.
Washington reports Minister Wu Ting Fang and Mme Wu packing for departure as Sir Liang prepares to arrive. Gifts to friends, officials, and admirers include porcelains, tapestries, ivory, silks, and rare headgear. The minister notes the generosity could empty his packing trunk.
In New York July 28 a Milwaukee Federated Trades Council letter urged independent political action and cooperation with a national labor movement. It argued labor oppression by parties and proposed labor candidates for president and Congress, prompting a committee to study the proposal.
In Trinidad, General Luciano Men doza's forces defeated a 1,009 strong reinforcement body headed to Alto de la Palma to aid Castro. The engagement near Carache in Los Andes captured the reinforcements ammunition as Baptista An ergazement forces were driven back.
A Lake George address reproduces a strong open letter to President Roosevelt from Adams Schurz and others. It accuses officers and soldiers in the Philippines of widespread demoralization and abuses inclucing kidnapping murder torture and executions. It also notes Roosevelt's April 15 and July 14 orders as stern corrective measures.
