Clinton Denies Pollard Clemency in Espionage Case

President Clinton rejected a clemency plea from convicted spy Jonathan Pollard after more than a decade in prison. The decision cited the enormity of the crime, lack of remorse, and damage to U.S. security, drawing Israeli and American Jewish protest and a hunger strike threat from Pollard's wife Esther. Pollard, a former Navy analyst, was arrested in 1985 and convicted in 1986 for selling Israel military intelligence. Pollard now remains imprisoned in North Carolina, with parole prospects deemed unlikely and longstanding opposition from law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
