Explosion at Olympics shocks Atlanta
An apparent pipe bomb exploded near Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta during an open air concert at the Games. One or two people were confirmed dead and more than 100 injured. Authorities evacuated the area and heightened security as the event continued.

Irish children find respite from war with US soccer program

Potomac killer given five life terms in murders and rape
Bruman Stalin Alvarez, an Ecuadorean immigrant, pleaded guilty to five counts of first degree murder and one count of first degree rape in the Potomac killings. Circuit Court Judge S Michael Pincus imposed five consecutive life terms without parole for the murders and an additional life term for the rape. Prosecutors said they chose life sentences to spare families further pain and because evidence tied Alvarez to all victims Alyse Goff 14 and others. The plea followed disclosures of DNA, a backpack with DNA, bloodstains, a BB gun, handcuffs, and other evidence linking Alvarez to the crimes.

Miami Man Called Drug Courier Arrested in Panty Raid
Frederick County officials expected drugs in a 40 foot trailer on I-270 but found floor to ceiling boxes of bras and underwear. Lazaro L. Gonzalez of Miami, 31, was arrested on a federal warrant from a Chicago drug case. No Maryland charges filed. Gonzalez held in Montgomery County Detention Center. Customs noted possible past drug smuggling. hidden compartments found, but no drugs recovered. About 50 boxes remained uneasily offloaded as the truck was reloaded.
