At the Presbyterian Home for Aged Couples and Single Men in Bala, 74-year-old William Smith, an inmate for two years, shot superintendent Mrs. Lilian Pierce and assistant Miss Elizabeth Wise in the dining room, then turned the pistol on himself. Both women survived their wounds. Smith died later at Presbyterian Hospital. Police and witnesses described Smith as unstable, with prior threats.

Harding Rebukes Union Press Man in Telegram

President Harding reproved J Cleve Dean of the Railway Employes Publicity Association in a telegram urging rail workers to accept the railroad labor board ruling and return to work while inviting a rehearing on disputed points. He dismissed Dean's appeal to American prejudice and framed the message as support for peace and justice. In separate notes, Swiss herders place flower garlands on bells for luck as cows head to summer pastures.
