Fire prevention queens on the way out in Carroll County
In 1990 Carroll County had 14 volunteer fire company fire prevention queen contests. Now only half hold them and three entrants per event is rare. Local residents blame busier schedules and newcomers unfamiliar with volunteer fire departments. The role is education focused, not a beauty pageant.

Sides Forming Up in Maryland Casino Debate
EASTON AP The heated dispute over legalizing casino gambling in Maryland grew clearer as a Talbot County hearing drew about 200 people. About 40 opponents criticized casinos harming families and diverting patrons from tracks and tourism, while 13 advocates argued casinos would boost regional economies amid a national trend of taxable job creation. Ocean City leaders cited a Florida study linking casinos to crime, and Senate Republican John Cade signaled opposition, noting money leaving legitimate commerce. The task force will hold hearings August in Prince George s County and Cumberland, with a December report planned.

Child Support Debt Grows Across Maryland Counties
ANNAPOLIS AP As requests for child support payments have exploded in 20 years so have unpaid debts. Anne Arundel County reports more than 38 million dollars uncollected through last summer, with Baltimore, Prince George’s and Montgomery counties posting larger totals. Baltimore City faces the steepest debts. From 1993 to 1994 the debt rose by over 60 million dollars. About 16,000 Marylanders will seek court ordered assistance this year, more than five times the level two decades ago. Experts say even if deadbeat parents are found the totals stay high as many owe to low and middle income families already strained.
