Fort Detrick to Install First Woman Battalion Commander
Lt. Col. Susan J. Melvin, 39, became the first woman to lead Fort Detrick’s 110th U.S. Army Signal Battalion during Blue and Gray Field ceremonies. She succeeds Lt. Col. John M. Dempsey, who received the Meritorious Service Medal for modernizing the unit’s digital networks and satellite control. Dempsey praised the battalion’s contributions to national security during the Persian Gulf War as Melvin, from Hawaii, outlined her pride in heading the unit. Melvin is a 1973 Oregon State graduate with prior roles in Germany and the U.S. Pacific Command.
