July 25 in Erle harbor two Windeld brothers Harry and Alvin drowned when their sailboat capsized during a party return trip. A gust overturned the craft and kept aboard passengers from reaching shore. Alvin Winfield’s sweetheart witnessed the tragedy from the shore along with others.
Pittsburg Pa July 25 Fourteen year old puller Lérric Long was badly burned when a four inch white hot billet of steel was placed inside his shirt by a crowd of rival negro workers. Six youths aged sixteen to eighteen were arrested on charges related to the act. Also reported Woman Saves Two From River Templeton Pa July 25 Mrs Alice Castor rescued Edward Bowers and Captain Austin Clark after a capsized rowboat incident, Clark later recovering with aid. 426 Cans of Frozen Eggs Seized New York Daily July 25 United States Marshal Henkel seized frozen eggs from a cold storage warehouse under a federal order deeming them unfit for human consumption. Local option election ordered for October 4 in Norfolk County including Port Norfolk West Norfolk and Pinners Point.
Maryland girl Irene Clayton sues for divorce from Henry F. Staley after a whirlwind twenty day marriage. Staley posed as Lord of Prenton and Earl of Aberdeen claiming vast wealth. He wooed Clayton and others for dowries, then vanished after the bogus titles were exposed. Mrs. Staley seeks restoration of her maiden name, alleging desertion.
Mrs. C W Morse reported the loss of a turtle shaped brooch with a large pearl and diamonds while visiting Atlanta where her husband is in federal prison. She suspects the gem fell from her dress during a crush at the Allanta depot and hopes the jewel will be found.
In Asbury Park New Jersey on a July day, Charles Delaney of Brooklyn and Charles Daly of Buffalo fought an hour and a half for a summer girl. They then used dice and glue to decide, with Delaney throwing two twos and fives and Daly three fours and aces as their seconds proposed the plan. The duel occurred in a secluded wooded area west of Avon, with both men evenly matched. The girl’s name was not disclosed by the principals or friends.
July 25 report from Tokio notes the Japanese vessel Tetgurel-Marn en route Kobe to Dalren found off Chindo Korea after heavy seas. The steamer carried 246 passengers with only forty saved and the rest missing as warships rushed to the scene. In Ogdensburg New York ham J. Davidson fifty-seven? No forty-seven years old was killed instantly by lightning. John Botah forty-two was badly injured and expected to die after a lightning strike at Moorea Forks while unloading hay. horses were killed, wagon and hay burned.
Four armed men stopped a West Shore Line immigrant train at Weehawken and looted a car of cash and jewelry worth about $600. A lookout shouted warnings as the gang moved through the crowd but fled when a station worker alerted police. The lookout resisted arrest and offered no information.
Two miners’ bodies were discovered in a Pennsylvania mining area after a year, identified easily as well preserved. One more body remains. the find follows an explosion incident. B Jacobs of Philadelphia left after a week in the city, reporting evidence about a beef trust method in the area.
A late night yacht blaze near Federalsburg forced crew and passengers to abandon to the water. Norma Brower, unable to swim, was saved by Orlando McClure as the vessel’s engine backfired and clothing and jewelry were lost in the flames. In New York July reports outline a bid by Osbornes allies within the Democratic State League to block Charley F Murphy of Tammany from controlling the state convention and nominate his governor rival. Friends of Thomas Mote Gebokek chair the state league and seek delegates from across the state, arguing that more candidates weaken Murphy’s grip and help Osborne. The effort centers on coordinating Democratic delegates to influence the September convention and secure Osborne’s favored ticket.
