Curtis of Putnamville Indiana learned from L Cecil of Columbia Tennessee that Rankin the Union spy was killed near Pillow farm Tennessee before Chickamauga. Cecil says Rankin was shot in a meadow and buried there by Pillow soldiers. The story links an old Indianapolis printer John Rankin to the spy’s fate and to archival inquiries led by Senator Voorhees.
