Mack Trims 215 Jobs at Winnsboro Plant
Mack Trucks announced 215 layoffs, 25 percent reduce, due to falling demand for trucks. Gov. Campbell criticized the move as unfair to South Carolina workers hired since the plant opened. Remaining staff include 345 South Carolinians. 300 transfers from Pennsylvania and Maryland aided by UAW, with recalls based on market. Output drops from 50 to 40 daily starting Aug. 28.
