Guard Against Bloat Among Beef Cattle
Dr. John E. Foster of the University of Maryland warns that richer pastures raise bloat risk in beef cattle. Ladino clover, while forage valuable, may contribute to bloat. Maryland studies aim to find prevention. Interim tips include dry pastures before turnout, prefeed hay, and short grazing intervals. Pastures with mixed grasses showed less severe bloat than pure ladino clover.

Destructive Porpoises Abundant In Chesapeake Bay
Annapolis July 21 Porpoises are scouting Chesapeake Bay and the Tidewater Fisheries Commission weighs concern. Chairman David H. Wallace says a notable number have been reported this year and appear more abundant than usual. Fishermen report sightings along the western shore near Chesapeake Beach and Thomas Point. A Tidewater inspector counted a large school near the Mouth of the Severn River, 79 croakers were netted after the porpoise presence. Wallace and Inspector Ball believe scavenging porpoises may have driven croakers to the surface, prompting plans to drive the hungry mammals back to sea.
