Rome July 22. The pope and Governor Taft met in the private library. The pope said negotiations could start a complete solution to the Friars Question and would oversee the process closely. Taft thanked the pope as they parted, and the party moved on to Naples after a 40 minute audience in French.
Oyster Bay July 22 President Roosevelt declines a U S Court of Claims appointment to Senator Jobo L McLaurin of South Carolina citing a newspaper accusation that he sold himself for the post. The president regrets the decision but notes McLaurin’s senatorial experience and attorney general tenure would have aided the country despite the charge.
Greenburg Pa July 22. William Byers leading Westmoreland County attorney and Democratic congressional candidate was arrested on charges of larceny by hack and two for larceny in connection with an alleged robbery of nearly $250,000 in money and bonds from Jacob Byers, reputed owner. Bail set at 255,900. Also notes Rev James J Keane named bishop of Cheyenne and other brief items including a bride’s hysterics and Bible publication plan.
Washington July 22 Major General Jobn R Brooke commander of the department of the east relieved Air General Jobin R Brooke at headquarters building on Governors Island The ceremony featured a large silver loving cup presented by officers of his staff Troops paraded a double line of sentries from General Brooke's house to the wharf and 123 guns fired in his honor

American League results show Cleveland defeated by Philadelphia, 19 to 11, with Boston and Chicago also scoring. Detroit beat Baltimore, 5 to 0, while Washington edged St Louis, 2 to 3. National League action had Brooklyn defeating Philadelphia, 10 to 1, and Chicago beating St Louis, 7 to 2. Other clubs were not scheduled.

Buffalo July 22 Lee Bruce an employe of Forepaugh and Sells Brothers was shot and killed as circus crowds attacked suspect Bowen after a watchman fired a shot. Bowen allegedly aimed at J K Shumate superintendent of horses who had reprimanded him. Three shots fired two near Shumate and one hit Bruce killing him. Detectives and police pulled Bowen from the mob but he was badly beaten before removal.
San Francisco July 22 The schooner Hermann sailed ostensibly for pleasure but is said to be in search of $70 000 000 in buried treasure from a mutinous Japanese ship crew. Captain James Brown, a retired mariner, leads four or five eastern friends on the voyage begun with a $15 000 outfitting.
Engineers yesterday began survey ing near Cumberland Maryland for the eastern extension of the Wabash rail road. W R Wells was hanged at Atlanta Georgia yesterday for the murder of Frederick Pierce a blind man last February. Mrs Peter Thoemich of Reading Pennsylvania fell dead from heart disease during a fight between dogs in her home Sunday evening. President Roosevelt appointed Hugh Suthon as superintendent of the United States Mint at New Orleans vice Boothby resigned. The torpedo boat destroyer Paul Jones built at San Francisco California has been delivered to the enternament at the Mare Island navy yard.
New York July 22 Formal complaint filed by Miss Yohe and her counsel alleges Captain Bradlee Strong stole jewels valued at 250000 from Miss Yohe’s safe at Knulckerbocker Safe Deposit Co. A general alarm was issued for Strong after his disappearance from Hastings. The safe was opened and only trinkets found.
Dublin reports Irish landowners form a combination with £100,000 capital to press for government aid. Prospectus cites government failure to assist landlords, urging united effort. Leading members include Arthur Hugh Smith Barry and others.
