State lab marks third year of petroleum and alcohol testing
Maryland's Petroleum Testing Lab at Jessup, run by the State Comptroller, closes its third year as it doubles as a consumer protection unit. In three years it tested over a billion gallons of gasoline with a drop in failure rate from 9.6 percent to 4.26 percent, and expanded testing to home heating oil diesel and kerosene. It now helps Alcohol and Tobacco Tax enforcement prove brand mislabeling of distilled spirits, using gas chromatography with 22 cases in fiscal year 1977 resulting in fines, license actions, and probation.
