Goldwater Suggests Civil Rights Quiet In Campaign
Senator Barry Goldwater urged keeping civil rights out of the 1964 campaign during a Chicago stop after a tense airport rally replayed boos and a Nazi-linked protest. He floated a meeting with President Johnson to discuss “this particular issue” and the White House said it would consider the proposal seriously.

Military Pay Hike Approved
Washington AP report says a pay rise for most officers and enlisted in the U.S. armed forces won Senate approval by voice vote. The measure, about 207 million dollars annually, targets permanent personnel after two years service. Draftees under two years receive no increase. 18 million service members would gain largely 22 percent base pay, with smaller rises for lower ranks. Fort Derick personnel would have about 5000 dollars more per month in gross income.
