Farm Fires Cause Major Loss Across Frederick County

A series of farm fires in Frederick and Carroll counties caused extensive damage and tied up eight volunteer fire companies from Montgomery County. The Johnsville area, Monrovia, Bartholows, Mt. Airy and nearby farms saw barns, hay, straw and grain losses. A 30-stanchion barn at the Johnsville Smith farm was destroyed along with a dairy barn, milking equipment, and a full silo. Fire officials suspect spontaneous combustion in freshly harvested forage for one blaze. In all, hundreds of bales of hay and bushels of grain were reported lost with no immediate dollar total available. Independent Hose units aided multiple sites including Wood estate and nearby fields. A separate incident involved a tractor fire from a gas leak, handled by Westminster and other departments.
