The body of Private Thomas Haag was recovered from the Rio Grande and buried. Also noted are a Hanover postal clerk arrest and a suicide related to job loss at a Pennsylvania coal area.
In northern France French troops push from Hardecourt to Combles and Clery across the Somme, taking trenches and capturing prisoners. Verdun sees bombardments with gains near Avecourt Chattancourt and a fortified German post near Fleury. British gains reported around Delville Wood Longueval and Leipsic Redoubt as fighting continues.
Berlin reports repeated French assaults south of the Somme were repulsed by German forces. Artillery fire reached peak intensity on both sides. A strong British attack north and southwest of Fromelles was defeated, with British gains eliminated by counter attacks as they entered German trenches.
The submarine Isanc Peral, a 200 foot craft built in Quincy for Spain, was attatched at Fore River Shipbuilding with Mrs. Juan Riano as sponsor.
