Flooding Kills Two in Western Pennsylvania
Gov. Tom Rudge declared eight counties disaster areas after flash floods that drenched western Pennsylvania killed two people, damaged more than 750 homes, destroyed nine, and caused $20 million in infrastructure losses. A toddler drowned in Bedford County and a 73 year old woman died fleeing a flood in Shippenville. The Ohio River near Pittsburgh was set to crest at 26 feet, and about 75 nursing home residents were evacuated as mains and sewers failed in Punxsutawney. Witnesses described waters sweeping through towns and lifting trailers and mobile homes.
