Viking 1 lands on Mars and sends first photos

Pegasus era report notes Viking 1 touched down on Mars at 4 53 a m PDT and began transmitting line by line images of Chryse Planitia. NASA scientists hailed the achievement as dramatic and the first clear views show rocky ground and a landing footpad while plans for life detection tests follow.

County Plans for Ellerton Area Face Resident Protests and Park Gate

County Commissioners met in a three hour session to weigh planning and drainage concerns in the Turkey Hill and Vista Farms area near Ellerton. While Turkey Hill residents praised a revised plan some feared residents are uninformed. Crum urged action via Planning Commission and sediment controls before land disturbance. Proposals included notifying planners to allow public input and a plan to gate Pinecliff Park after 11 p.m. to curb noise and curfew violations.

GNP growth rate falls in spring quarter

Washington AP report shows the Gross National Product rising at a 4.4 percent annual rate in April through June, down from 9.2 percent in January to March. Economists expect the slowdown to be temporary as business inventories stabilize.

City restores water supply from Fishing Creek after leak repair

City officials announced the Fishing Creek supply is back online after a two week leak in the drain tunnel. The reservoir is being filled at 1.2 million gallons per day, with a 40 foot depth target and 7 feet remaining, while 3 million gallons per day are drawn from the stream. Officials also noted earlier odor and taste issues from the Singanore plant have been fixed and inflation signals show mixed GNP and personal income data for the quarter. A fatal home accident on Boss Arnold Road near Md 464 was reported with investigators en route.

Frederick county workers mostly commute out of county

A Maryland Statistical Abstract table shows over one fifth of Frederick County workers commute elsewhere, totaling 227 percent of local employed residents. Fort Detrick is noted as the area’s largest employer, with most commuters heading to Montgomery or Baltimore regions and a small share to Washington counties.

Ford claims 16 more delegates

In Washington AP report Ford campaign says 16 additional Republican National Convention delegates pledged to Ford, including seven from New York and one from each of Illinois Delaware Louisiana and South Carolina. Suffolk County NY adds seven switchers while Virginia adds five. Howard Baker notes Ford has 1,119 of 1,130 needed for nomination.
