History minded citizens saved the old Annapolis customs house from destruction. The 19th century building will be restored to 18th century appearance and rented for shops and offices. A private nonprofit venture led by Mrs J M P Wright and joined by Kent R Muthken Dr Stuart Walker William Stone aims to preserve waterfront colonial landmarks and encourage similar efforts. Restoration also begins on the nearby Slicer House financed by a public fund. Over 45 colonial-era buildings remain on the waterfront with plans to restore them for business use.

Police Nab Bowens After Month of Freedom Escape
Roger Winfield Bowens, 23, escaped City Jail on June 19 and was recaptured by City Police on Sunday. He now faces escape charges and remains jailed. Bowens had been serving a 50 day assault and battery sentence after being admitted June 4.
