Gate City steamer ran aground near Naushon Island
The Gate City of the Boston and Savannah line ran ashore on the south side of Naushon Island in Vineyard Sound at 7 15 PM on Sunday. Fog and engine trouble left her immobile in about fifteen feet of water. A rescue boat reached Tarpaulin Cove and then the steamer William O Brown rescued thirty of fifty two passengers. The rest and crew stayed aboard, with plans that the Brown would return on the next trip to take them off. The vessel was believed to be later floated off.
