A vast blaze swept Knapp, Stout & Co. lumber yards in St Louis on July 19, consuming 25,000,000 feet of lumber across 35 acres. Poor water supply and strong winds hampered efforts as 20 to 25 engines fought the flames, with losses estimated at 400,000 in lumber and 275,000 in insurance unknown.
