Farm deferment rules shift focus for draftees
Major Thomas M. Nial explains the four year extension to the draft law changes. Draft boards may not weigh farm shortages or surpluses when granting farm deferments. Deferments hinge on producing for market and maintaining national health. Full time farm work is required, not related businesses. Boards must show a shortage of qualified labor to replace the farmer, and the farm’s loss of effectiveness if the farmer leaves. Deferments last a year or less and can be renewed. deferment applicants remain draft eligible until age 35, while nondeferred are eligible until 26. Readiness to answer questions should go to the local draft board or Major Nial via the newspaper with stamped envelope.
