Penny adopts a wage payment system promising twenty six days of work each month and guaranteed employment protections. The plan, described as a day’s work for a day’s pay, aims to settle a wage dispute by ensuring steady hours and shielding workers from unpaid shifts.
The terms of settlement base on Central award, shifting from trip pay to mileage pay. Light runs workers receive protection, a uniform of ten hours to be established, and the six hour short trip minimum to be abolished. Men gain twenty workdays a month, claim settlement needed to clear misund erstandings at Andige. Company says no concessions beyond six weeks ago.
Philadelphia reports a tentative settlement between General Manager Myers and railroad employee subcommittees after a long conference. The plan shifts from a trips pay to mileage, abolishes the six hour minimum, fixes a ten hour minimum, and grants twenty six workdays per month. Details to be worked out by division representatives. no further talks unless developments arise. A. J. Garrettson of the Order of Railway Conductors left the meeting.
In Cedar Rapids a meeting of the board of directors of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trademen and the company failed to yield marked concessions. Workers sought 37 cents overtime, opposed by the company’s stance of 40 cents. both sides claim progress in clearing misunderstandings. W.G. Lee remains in town to assist.
Wilkes-Barre Pa December 19 Track foremen and section hands of the Delaware & Hudson railroad agreed through officials to arbitration after two weeks of threatened strike. The company has offered 2.26 a day for track foremen and 1.65 for helpers, higher than current wages. Main issue remains the duration of any agreement, with the union seeking one year but the company resisting. In other news a 47 year old woman in the Criminal Insane asylum at Mathcawan, N J hanged herself from a transom with a towel. she had prior manslaughter conviction from New York in 1904.
Atlantic City July 19 A business man from New York Joseph Grasser was robbed in broad daylight on the Boardwalk while seated in a rolling chair. Two men bound him and stole $180 in cash and wallet after police work led to arrests Frank Quinn and Ambrose Brown. Detective Whalen traced the crime and Grasser identified the suspects at City Hall.
