Architect Paul Spreiregen outlined a staged four tier parking plan behind City Hall with 210 to 240 spaces at an estimated 750000 dollars. The plan requires razing three houses and a southeast corner restaurant, plus green space. The Downtown Frederick Association supported moving to a formal city review.
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen set a special meeting for Thursday at 7 30 p m in City Hall Assembly Room to hear Washington architect Paul D Spreiregen present tiered parking design recommendations. The Downtown Frederick Association funded the $2000 study as a gift to the city. The Historic District Commission will seek approval for a historic district study to aid the Bicentennial program and assess downtown buildings.
Kathrine Elizabeth Plemmons a 49 year old Mt Airy resident died after her car struck a tractor trailer on U S 40 as she attempted a lane change. She died at Frederick Memorial Hospital at 8 45 p m. The truck driver faced no charges.
Fire calls reported with Brunswick responding to an auto fire on Ninth Avenue at 5:58 p.m. At 7:39 a.m. wash down on Unionville Road with Liberty Town and Union Bridge responding. Ambulance calls show 8 emergencies and 7 routine runs. Jail population lists 30 males 3 females and 1 juvenile.
Frederick Mayor E P Magaha and the Board of Aldermen with the Metropolitan Sanitary Commission agreed to hire a consulting engineer. The goal is to determine extra sewage treatment capacity needed for city and county and where new facilities should be located. They aim to have projections by 1975 and consider sharing facilities or separate plants.
The McAllister Schwartz Construction of Rockville submitted the lowest bid of 928000 for the Woodsboro Elementary project, but the amount surpasses the original budget. Gilbert Newby notes the bid is way over the planned cost while Dr. John Carnachan and state officials discuss possible funding. No decisions from the state committee are available yet.
State's Attorney Robert S. Rothenhoefer said a decision on a part time assistant state's attorney could come by noon, with three candidates in consideration. The hire, funded by a $6,375 grant, will aid District and Circuit Court caseloads while the county also adds intern George T. About 130 day shift guards at the Maryland State Penitentiary walked off briefly to meet with state corrections officials protesting Gov. Marvin Mandel s direct intervention in a six hour inmate uprising that left four hostages and extensive prison damage. The guards demanded action on long standing grievances and criticized Mandel and Rep. Parren Mitchell for perceived interference. Mandel said no amnesty for rebels and noted courts stripped guards of control over prisoners as negotiations continued.
The Frederick Post Office launches a Night Owl collection starting Monday July 24. Two Star boxes at multiple city locations accept mail from 6 30 to 7 p m, with single white stars indicating evening collection. Regular boxes without stars are collected only with the daily route.
Two underwater explosions damaged the 390 foot destroyer Warrington in the Tonkin Gulf while intercepting cargo from three Chinese freighters. One sailor suffered minor injuries. the ship flooded in engineering spaces but control was restored. Warrington proceeded to Subic Bay under its own power before tow.
The GOP reports growing Democratic support for Nixon's re election as volunteers and youth mobilization surge. State Senator Edward Thomas notes 20 to 30 young volunteers with many older supporters, while leaders warn of tough competition and a broad grass roots effort aimed at registering and energizing young voters ahead of the fall campaign.
