Wages survey ridiculed by Maryland labor leaders
In Baltimore on July 17 labor leaders blasted Maryland Department of Public Improvements on Wages for state construction as a burlesque and not worth the paper it is written on. John B. Funk presented the table based on interviews with about four thousand contractors, showing $1.63 per hour for electricians in Montgomery County and $2.70 for some electricians overall, with other low figures cited for lumber foremen and plumbers. Clark Ellis of the Baltimore Building and Construction Trades Council called the methods all wet, saying the survey would be weighed against union scales. The commission, created by the 1950 Legislature, will tentatively set prevailing wages and hold hearings after an August 1 deadline.
