Albert L. Huffer of Frog Town Route 4 Middletown was found not guilty of assault and battery after his wife Mildred V. Huffer refused to testify in Peoples Court before Substitute Magistrate Edward J. Smith. Huffer had pleaded not guilty and paid $2 costs after release on a $300 bond. Magistrate Smith warned Mrs. Huffer against seeking warrants in future care only on more serious matters. Separately Sammes Thompson of Frederick, claimed celebrating his birthday, was jailed five days for intoxication after failing to pay a £5 fine. He was arrested Monday by City Police Sergeant Ben Hebus in West Patrick Street.
Paris July 19 A Yale physician Dr Francisco Duran Reynals told the International Cancer Research Congress that childhood illnesses like colds and chickenpox can seed cancers in adulthood. Dormant viruses may reactivate with aging or bodily changes, potentially triggered by hormones irritants or chemicals. He based his theory on experiments with young chickens.
Washington reports the government can curb rising prices for many farm goods without new price controls. It can set ceilings by disposing of surpluses under price support programs, using set sale prices for non perishables and flexible pricing for perishables to prevent sharp rises.
Annapolis July 19 A Baltimore Superior Court jury awarded radio announcer Marvin Ellin $500 from Cloverland Farms Dairy for kerosene found in its orangeade after he drank it last November. Ellin endured a night of fits, with chemists confirming kerosene in the beverage. The Court of Appeals, by a split verdict, upheld the award despite Cloverland denying any kerosene storage, noting only Cloverland’s driver and Ellin touched the bottle.
Consumers in Los Angeles show a wartime style run on coffee pepper sugar shortening and other staples with repeated visits rather than large dumps. Retailers note the wave as the biggest since rationing ended but insist households are buying modest amounts twice rather than hoarding. The body found floating in Baltimore harbor has been identified as Hiram Jacobs of Frederick. Police confirm ID via a social security card and a carpenter’s union membership card from Crawfordsville Indiana. Circumstances of death remain undetermined. Jacobs, about 50, lived in Baltimore for ten years after leaving his Frederick home. Survivors include three brothers in Wilmington Delaware one brother in Byron Illinois and several nieces and nephews in Baltimore.

Annapolis July 19 The Court of Appeals ordered the state to pay builders at Deers Head State Hospital an extra $259,000 for spiraling costs after an eight month work stoppage. The Board of Public Works failed to obtain a Civilian Production Administration permit, the court ruled. Judge Edward Delaplaine said the state is liable for damages from breach of contract.
A bomb exploded late last night in the wall of the royal palace of Laeken near Brussels. King Leopold is expected to reside on his return to Belgium from exile later this week. Police are investigating expansion with few details. The palace now houses Queen Mother Elizabeth. A hole about one foot square was blown in the wall.
