Thousands Of Fish Die In Monocacy River Incident
Thousands of fish of many species were found dead along the Monocacy River below Frederick's disposal plant from the lower river to Frederick Junction. City officials and the regional game warden investigated possible chemical causes, but city engineers found no change in sewage treatment. Mayor Hugh V. Gittinger suggested upstream dynamiting as the cause due to many fish with blown stomachs, while officials noted the odor appeared early Monday morning.
