Private Charles E. Kerchner aged 36 of Walkersville was killed in action in France on June 21 according to a War Department telegram to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Kerchner. He had nine years Army service, served at Camp Atterbury and Camp Gordon Johnson, and had worked at Glade Valley Garber Baking and Singer offices in Fredericksburg. Polar bear mauls New York teen at Central Park Zoo
