Baltimore Zoo hatches rare hooded crane in captivity
Baltimore Zoo officials say a hooded crane hatched two weeks ago, the fifth world facility to breed the rare Siberian nesting crane in captivity. Director Brian Rutledge calls the chick’s birth an extremely rare event amid ongoing efforts to mimic natural conditions with simple lighting. The egg’s single birth, health issues resolved, and parental care are noted as signs of a successful outcome.
