Conference Approves Housing Legislation Amid Split Conferees
A Senate House conference committee approved new housing legislation generally in line with administration aims but rejected Eisenhower's public housing program. The measure tightens FHA loan insurance to curb windfall profits and lowers down payments for FHA insured homes. Three House Democrats on the committee declined to sign, objecting to the public housing stance. The report was signed by nine conferees led by Capehart and Wolcott, with Maybank expressing reservations. A one year public housing program was adopted, up to 35,000 units for families displaced by federal slum clearance or redevelopment.
