Naval Academy to offer astronautics program for top students
About 40 top Annapolis cadets will join a new astronautics program at the U S Naval Academy. They will study spacecraft design rocket launching and satellite monitoring to become future Navy and industry leaders in space. The program, approved by Admiral Larson, aims to graduate first astronauts in 1989. Cmdr William L McCracken says space training will be essential for operating Navy satellites and space related operations. The academy already lists 28 astronauts among alumni, including Cmdr Michael J Smith who died in the Challenger disaster.
