U N Bids for Real Forces Not Tokens in Korean War Effort

United Nations appealed to 52 member nations to rush effective ground forces for a UN army to halt North Korean invasion. Secretary-General Trygve Lie announced the move at a news conference as talks noted Soviet bloc opposition. An informal meeting with U S diplomats and Andrew Cordier authorized providing real forces, not token troops, to bolster Gen. Douglas MacArthur's command. The Chinese Nationalists were invited to offer troops but any future use would be bilateral with MacArthur. Lie cautioned against setting conditions like surrender or peace before too long, awaiting a flexible postwar Korea plan.
