Controlling flies on Maryland livestock farms

University of Maryland Extension entomology specialists outline fly control for dairy pig and poultry operations. Sanitation is key to reduce breeding, with management practices to remove manure and damp debris, using black plastic to heat and destroy larvae, and drainage to prevent standing water. Biological control with parasitic wasps is not cost effective on large diverse breeding sites, while insecticides are supplemental. Use space sprays for quick knockdown, residual surface sprays for resting sites, and bait as needed. avoid spraying animals during milking. Feed-through larvicides may help in spring and summer with strict sanitation. Rabon premix recommended for dairy and beef at 70 mg per 100 lb.
