Veney case: Judge Stepler to write opinion in 30 days
Judge Mary Ann Stepler said she would prepare a written opinion within 30 days after Veney's request for sentence reconsideration was denied. The defense argued by Ara Crowe and Laura Mullally contends the verdict and life sentence were warranted. The Veney brothers robbed a Baltimore liquor store on Christmas Eve 1964. Sgt. Jack Lee Cooper was killed nearby during the manhunt. The case reached the Maryland Court of Appeals in 1973 and the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the conviction. Veney has since died in prison. Cooper's widow remains alive and interested in the case.
