Teens indicted for 1st degree murder in Potomac River slaying

Four Frederick teens, including a 16 year old boy and a 16 year old girl, were indicted on all murder charges by the Frederick County Grand Jury in the June 17 slaying of 20 year old Adrian Pilkington. Pilkington, stabbed and tossed from a Md 17 bridge into the Potomac, was found four days later. Authorities consider life sentences without parole for the four, with death penalty possible only under Maryland rules for adults in certain cases.

Pony Express Tour raises funds for breast cancer research

A dozen motorcyclists with a police escort rode through Frederick as part of a 14 300 mile Pony Express Tour to raise 250 000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The leg honored Jamie Mendlovitz who died of breast cancer last October.

Smithsburg youth crowned Frederick County Farm Queen

Melissa Willard, 18, a Catoctin High School graduate and Maryland FFA Association secretary, was crowned the 1996 97 Frederick County Farm Queen during a Friday ceremony. She plans a career in animal genetic research and aims to educate the public on agriculture.
