The forecast predicts a solar eclipse with sunlit skies giving way to darkness this afternoon and a return to sun and clouds later. Scientists will observe the solar corona from Hudson Bay to North Pole distances using telescopes and radiation devices to study its impact on radio systems and auroral activity.
Liquor License Commissioner A Irvin Renn tentatively approved a Class B beer license for Beckley Distribu ting Co for Beckley Restaurant on US 15 north of Frederick. It requires health department approval and will serve beer only with meals.
An All-Playground Flower Show sponsored by the Garden Club of Frederick will be held Thursday on the Court House lawn from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Open to all city children entries must be brought to the nearest city playground and registered with the leader in charge. Entries must show entrant name and playground and be marked with tape. Classification includes Horticulture and Flowers with rules for roses zinnias and collections.
William Parkins new Frederick Towne Mall general manager says downtown vitality needs more parking, an office complex, and tourism. He notes industry seeks a strong downtown and cites Annapolis as showing higher quality stores can boost downtown trade despite initial competition.

Maryland State Police authorize a medivac helicopter for Frederick County. First Sgt. William Davis says training is underway but the aircraft will arrive in several weeks. Commissioner John Derr notes county use is desired though funding is unresolved and the copter may be based at Frederick Municipal Airport.

Edward P. Oden veteran businessman and former Frederick city alderman died Sunday evening at University Hospital Baltimore. He lived at 905 Market St and was widower of Edna Tinney Oden. A master plumber, he headed Oden Brothers Plumbing Inc and served three terms on the City Board of Aldermen 1937 to 1946. He was active in the Republican Party and belonged to Evangelical Lutheran Church LOOF and Eagles Aerie 1067. Born October 25, 1894 in Frederick, he was son of Melvin A. and Mary Ellen Kanode Oden. Survived by one daughter and siblings.
