Forecast Warns of Thunderstorms and Heat Wave Strain

Thunderstorms were forecast Sunday through Tuesday as Maryland’s mid Atlantic heat wave pushed demand higher. Frederick and Washington counties peaked at 1,985 megawatt hours Wednesday evening, with 1,954 on Tuesday. A July 23, 1991 peak of 1,839 MWh was noted. Heat is driven by a high pressure system while forecasters expect no relief until Tuesday. Heat drives air conditioner sales and power use, while Montgomery County extends trash pickup hours to 5 a.m. to ease crews’ burden.
