Failure To Halt Strike Returns To Negotiations
Government mediators failed to win full termination of the AFL switchmen strike on the Rock Island system. They reported progress toward averting a nationwide walkout by two other unions. The Switchmen’s Union rejected a third government request to return all strikers to work, saying it will continue its 13 day walkout affecting 8000 miles of Rock Island service. The union offered a “reasonable proposal” to settle with all carriers, though details were not disclosed. The National Railway Mediation Board will forward the proposal as talks with Railroad Trainsmen and Conductor unions proceed. With 200,000 potential strikers, action is tentatively planned after July 13. A general chairmen meeting in Chicago is set for Monday to decide next steps.
