Residents contend with Canada geese damage in Wyoming Town Park
In Wyoming Del park the large Canada geese linger year round and foul the turf. Park manager Wayne Tompkins notes up to 200 birds, leaving bare patches and a foul odor in hot weather. The issue reflects a regional pattern across Delaware Maryland and nearby states where resident geese and snow geese devastate marsh and farmland. At Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge about 1000 acres have been denuded by wintering snow geese.

Population boom in Maryland and Delaware geese
Figures show snow and resident Canada geese numbers rising sharply in Maryland and Delaware. The 1990 to 1997 counts reveal Canada geese up over tenfold in Delaware and near tripling in Maryland, while snow geese rise seven to tenfold. Officials confront the problem with hunts, deterrents, and habitat management, including cannons, firecrackers, and a border collie at Congressional Country Club.
