Iran’s IRNA cited informed Beirut sources saying a Western hostage, probably European, may be released soon from Lebanon where 16 Western captives are held by Hezbollah factions. No identity or timing was disclosed. six Americans and ten Europeans are among the hostages.
The Associated Press reports a long list of Americans and other nationals known to be kidnapped in Lebanon during 1985 to 1989. Names include Terry A. Anderson Thomas Sutherland Joseph Cicippio Edward Tracy Alain Steen Jesse Turner Parry Waite Alec Collett John McCarthy Alberto Molinari Brian Keenan Jack Mann Heinrich Struebig Thomas Kempitner Elio Erriquez and Emmanuel Christen among others. Missing victims remain unaccounted for.
In Moscow the Soviet leader compelled a largely conservative Communist Party congress to abandon a bid to rate each Politburo member. He warned such a vote would split or bury the party and prevailed to have the Central Committee evaluated as a whole.
Charles McKenna washed his 1984 Renault Alliance on Gibbons Road in Point of Rocks when the car rolled about 20 feet into the family pool. The gear lever moved to neutral, the emergency brake was off, and despite his efforts he could not stop it. The car sank into the shallow end and was later removed by a wrecker. Frederick County Republicans see David R. Brinkley of Lake Shore drive and Donald Deering of Brookshire Run filing to seek full terms on the county GOP Central Committee while Democrat Darrell E. Anderson of Middletown campaigns on grassroots reform. Anderson previously ran for Congress in 1982 and works with at risk youth.
Roy Steven Carlson 85 of Walkersville received a heart transplant at Johns Hopkins University Hospital after a 3 15 a.m. call on June 4. The operation followed a chest X-ray and 16 days in the hospital. He is now walking, exercising, and adjusting to a strict diet with his wife Judy praising donors and Hospice support.
