British troops push toward the French front along the Somme despite heavy German fire. Near Duéval a slight gain and more prisoners. foothold gained in a trench salient south of La Bassee canal. French progress on the Somme places left at Hardecourt and right at Eds trees, with heavy gains and numerous captures including seventy six cannon and hundreds of machine guns.
German trenches remain occupied as artillery devastates defenders with heavy shelling. British losses vary with some units suffering greatly while others seize undefended positions. German HQ claims advances by the British from the Ancre to the Somme. Thiepval near Thiepval shows no progress, and Hem village in the Somme valley is evacuated by the Germans.

Berlin claims German lines held but Bothmer’s forces shifted in Galicia. reports describe heavy fighting with significant Russian losses. An enemy aeroplane dropped bombs near Misek, wounding civilians.
