London July 6 French forces assault and breach the second German trench line along a two kilometer front from Clery Maricourt to the Somme north bank. They seize Hem village and the Sor Mont farm opposite Clery while completing occupation of Estrees after 200 Germans surrender. British reports say continued pressure and prisoner gains with stubborn German counter attacks in the Somme and Ancre regions.
German losses in the Somme are estimated around 60,000 with few guns captured as artillery was withdrawn to longer ranges. French and British forces report large prisoner tallies and dozens of German guns seized. German reinforcements move from Verdun to bolster defenses while a possible counteroffensive is eyed between the Belgian border and Arras.
London July 6 The Irish question outlook improves as Wal ter Hume Long president of the local government board receives assurances justifying his withdrawal of resignation. A Unionist meeting to discuss the matter will be held at the Charlton Club on Friday.
Washington July 6 Orders for the retirement on July 29 of Admiral Cameron McRae Winslow commander of the Pacific fleet were issued by the navy department. His successor will be announced in a few days as the age limit prompts his departure from command.
Russian cavalry patrols crossed the Carpathians into Hungary from Kimpolung, cutting telegraph wires and destroying food and munition depots. Violent eastern front fighting reported as German and Russian lines exchange blows near Baranovichi with heavy losses and prisoner counts.
Paris reports that central powers have lost 251200 prisoners since June 5 with 232300 on the Russian front and 4700 on the Italian front and 14200 on the Anglo French front. It adds that dead and wounded equal or exceed prisoner losses, implying a minimum of half a million combatants lost in the last month not counting Verdun.
The Pennsylvania State Association of Postoffice Clerks opened its fifteenth annual convention in Harrisburg. Officers elected: President A. R. Goetz Altoona. First Vice President J. A. Ness Dubois. Second Vice President N. C. Keating Scranton. Secretary J. W. Godley Easton. Treasurer H. K. Rife Chambersburg. Financial Secretary Harry Garnet Reading. A banquet was held in the evening. A major railroad is being equipped with oil burning locomotives and may move away from coal.
