Farm Bureau backs Farm Credit Act changes to protect farmers
Maryland Farm Bureau officials tell Senate subcommittee they support the Farm Credit Act of 1971 in principle but seek amendments to keep the cooperative system focused on agricultural producers. They oppose extending credit to nonfarmers for rural housing and urge safeguards to protect land banks and PCAs. They also oppose farm credit units owning processing facilities and seek allowed services like record keeping and tax help only when needed and not as loan eligibility condition. Additionally they favor housing the Farm Credit Administration outside USDA as it remains farmer owned.
