Heavy Rains End Drought and Heat Wave
Heavy weekend rain broke a drought and heat wave across the region with little damage. About three quarters of an inch fell between 4 and 5 pm Monday, easing parched crops and pastures as cooler, drier air moved in. Scattered showers Sunday after noon ended the heat siege. rainfall totals pushed July past one inch locally. Power outages occurred from gusty winds and a large tree blocked U S 340 at Jefferson. County farmers hailed the rain as invaluable for corn, hay, pastures, beans, and tomatoes, with the Fishing Creek spillway still flowing and the reservoir likely to stay full for days.

Three Russians and Two Americans Expelled
The United States expelled three Soviet officials for espionage and improper activities. Two American attachés, Lt Col Howard Feldlin and Maj Walter McKinney, were declared persona non grata and will depart with their families. Moscow retaliated by expelling them and another American, amid Russian accusations of espionage. The State Department denied any foundation for the charges and noted this as retaliation for prior Soviet expulsions.

British End Meat Rationing After 14 Years
London on July five reports say meat left rationing after fourteen years but shoppers bought little more than usual. Traders attribute slow change to deep habit, while housewives saved meat for weekends as the Sunday joint became a relic of rationing. Retail butchers, however, stocked markets busy with buyers as prices rise. Only certain cuts like breast of lamb and scrag end remained priced unchanged.
