Frederick pilots three-year $19 million drinking and driving program
Frederick officials gave a green light to a three year 19 million pilot project aimed at reducing drinking and driving. The program named Alternative Rides of Frederick includes a Designated Driver and Safe Rides service. Westat officials say the initiative could become a model for other communities. Safe Rides offers free taxi rides home for drinking drivers 21 and older within city limits or Key Mall area, with free return rides to collect cars the next day. Riders must show a car at the drinking site and rides go only to private residences or local hotels within the county. Continuous service seven days a week. The project begins August 3 and will run through the county.
