Frederick high school students join the maintenance crew in Catoctin Mountain Park. They paint signs, paste trails and assist with stream work while enjoying outdoor labor. Terrie Weaver and Joanie Raymond describe the hands on tasks and carefree park life.
Frederick County commissioners voted 1 to 0 to spend 208000 to obtain 29 acres for a Urbana park. Kiplinger Washington Editors will donate 8.4 acres after selling 11.6 acres for 200000, with tax credits cited as a concern by Sterling Bollinger. Public debate and objections by Theodore Ward marked the meeting as officials pursue a school fire station park complex with Potomac Edison.
Mrs. Mangiafico, a Myersville mother with three children in county schools, was appointed by Gov. Harry Hughes to the seven member Frederick County Board of Education to fill the vacancy left by Gail Bowerman. The Democrat will serve a five year term, balancing PTA and 4-H involvement with active community service.
Frederick County will receive a $425,000 Community Development Block Grant from HUD to repair water wells, replace wells, and fund a housing rehabilitation loan and grant program. The funds also support sewer connections to Brunswick’s proposed system and indoor plumbing for homes lacking it, benefiting about 300 people.
Steven John Donahue, 32, of Hollywood, California, was freed from Lebanese drug traffickers and handed over to the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. Lebanese officials and embassy spokesman Robert Gould confirmed the release though Donahue said he was not an American government employee and that money changed hands. The DEA denied he acted as an informant or that charges about his activities were pursued.
