Van crash halted I-70 near Jefferson Pike with seven injured

An accident on I-70 at Jefferson Pike sent seven people to Frederick Memorial Hospital. A 1986 Ford van, with Denver McCabe of Baltimore beside the door, was struck by a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass. The van overturned into a ditch, McCabe was struck as it spun, and Misty Schmeltz and four others were hospitalized along with McCabe and his wife Winona. Schmeltz faced negligent driving charges. I-70 was closed about 1 hour 15 minutes amid heavy holiday traffic.

River levels fall but remain hazardous on Potomac

Water levels on the Potomac River declined to 839 feet at Point of Rocks and 939 feet at Harpers Ferry by 7:30 p.m. Friday, still well above the hazardous 5 foot mark. State officials urge boaters to stay off the river over the holiday weekend as life threatening conditions persist.

Reckless driving charges filed against Woodsboro man

David William Hoffman, 36, of Sixes Road Woodsboro, faces eight motor vehicle charges after a three week sheriff's probe into reckless driving complaints. The list includes driving left of center, unsafe passing, speed on a curve, negligent and reckless driving, leaving unattended property damage, failing to locate the owner of unattended property, and driving with a suspended license. The complaint stemmed from a June 9 report of a black Ford pickup on Putman Road. Deputies pursued the investigation after initial attempts failed to locate the vehicle.

Woman held after Beau Stabbing Incident in Frederick

Frederick woman Donna Marie Roberts, 33, was arrested on charges of stabbing with intent to disfigure carrying a deadly weapon and assault and battery after her boyfriend Dale Smith, 31, said she stabbed him in the leg while he slept on Golden Valley Court. He was treated by neighbors and declined ambulance care. Police say she is held on $2,500 bail at the Frederick County Detention Center.

Vance feeling OK after crash at Seneca Valley High

Montgomery County School Superintendent Paul L. Vance, 64, said tests after a single car crash in front of Seneca Valley High School were all normal. He was hospitalized at Holy Cross after being transferred from Shady Grove Adventist and expected to be discharged soon.

Flooding death toll rises as storms push across regions

Showers and thunderstorms swept the East while the Pacific coast stayed mostly clear. Virginia reported six deaths and two missing as eight days of rain caused severe flooding. Georgia to West Virginia saw storms with a heavy band in North Carolina, debris-filled valleys, and continued rains in Texas.

Suspect Arrested After 130 MPH Maryland Chase

Maryland State Police say a stolen Nissan 300 ZX was driven at 130 mph during a five mile pursuit that ended with the driver Domineke Trashan McMahan, 20, fleeing on foot and later captured. An accomplice in a Eagle Talon was involved. the chase began near Md 28 and Old Georgetown Road. McMahan faces fleeing, eluding, speeding, suspended license, hit and run, and unauthorized use charges.

Frederick police arrest 19 year old on cocaine charges

Frederick City Police arrested Michael Darnell Beckwith of Broadway Street on possession of cocaine and possession with intent to distribute plus resisting arrest and battery after officers say they observed him in suspected drug transactions on South Market Street at about 5 30 p m Beckwith was found with eight large chunks of crack cocaine and remanded to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center.
